We’re one of the first UK fuel suppliers to be certified carbon neutral!

We’re delighted to have been officially certified carbon neutral in line with PAS 2060:2014 standards. As a fuel distributor, we understand that our operations have an impact on the environment, but we see this as an opportunity to make positive change rather than an excuse for inaction.

We’ve put sustainability at the core of our business to help find new ways to reduce our corporate emissions, and this certification is not only recognition of the efforts taken so far – it’s an important step on our journey to reach net zero direct emissions by 2030 or sooner.

Why have we become carbon neutral?

Instead of waiting for new environmental laws to legislate emission reductions, we want to lead the change and inspire others to follow in our footsteps. This began when we started offsetting the emissions of our delivery fleet in 2012 and again when we invested heavily in HVO fuel in 2018. We saw becoming carbon neutral as a natural progression to reaching our target of achieving net zero direct emissions by 2030 or sooner.

All businesses have their part to play in helping the UK achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and we are no exception. In addition to the ethical reasons, reaching carbon neutral status helps us improve our reputation, inspire our stakeholders and local community, and most importantly, demonstrates our commitment to tackling climate change.

How we achieved carbon neutral status

When setting ourselves the goal of achieving carbon neutral status, we wanted to be recognised by genuine international standards. That’s why we strived to achieve carbon neutral status in line with PAS 2060 standard published by BSI. To reach PAS 2060 standard, we adhered to a four-stage process involving:

1. Measuring our emissions

We calculated the Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions of our operations using the World Resources Institute GHG Protocol methodology guided by the key principles of relevance, completeness, transparency and accuracy.

2. Reducing our emissions with a clear carbon management plan

After measuring our emissions, we developed an in-depth carbon-cutting plan and implemented sustainability into the heart of everything we do at Speedy Fuels. We found that cutting the emissions of our delivery vehicles was crucial to us achieving carbon neutral status. That’s why we looked for alternative fuel solutions to diesel and switched our entire delivery fleet to run on HVO fuel, reducing the net CO2 emissions of our deliveries by up to 90%.

We also engage all our staff in regular sustainability training sessions and allow staff to share their ideas that can help us become more sustainable through competition. We’ve divided our staff into teams and each week a new team will share their idea for us to become more sustainable as people and as a business with the best ideas adopted into our daily practices.

3. Offset all our remaining emissions

To reach carbon neutral status we realised that we needed to utilise carbon offsetting to counteract the remaining emissions of our operations. This involved purchasing verified carbon credits to support carbon-reducing projects around the globe such as tree planting, renewable energy and waste management. To ensure that we met PAS 2060 standard, all our carbon credits were (and are) independently verified to the highest international standards (including Verified Carbon Standard, Gold Standard, REDD+, Fairtrade, United Nations, Plan Vivo).

4. Documenting and validating

To verify our carbon neutral status, we had our methodology and data audited with other-party validation. We publicly disclosed our qualifying explanatory statement in April 2022 for full transparency with a detailed action plan for our ongoing commitment.

What’s next for Speedy Fuels sustainability targets?

Our next target is to reach net zero direct emissions by 2030 or sooner and we believe that by breaking it down into smaller targets we can achieve our goal. In 2024 we installed solar panels for all our offices and EV chargers for our staff to help transition our business transition to renewable energy, which has helped to reduce our Scope 2 emissions. By 2029, our fuel system pumps will be upgraded and all our small vehicles will be electric, reducing our Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 90%. Our targets and actions will be constantly reviewed by directors and stakeholders to ensure appropriate funding and resources are allocated to help us reach our goal.
